As part of the rigorous helicopter pilot training program, HELI COMPANY—acting as the Approved Training Organization for the Armed Forces Academy (AOS)—dedicated the month of November to mastering formation flight operations.
Formation flying is one of the cornerstone modules in the preparation of future helicopter pilots of the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic (OS SR). It represents the transition from individual aircraft handling to coordinated, team-based operations. This phase develops communication, spatial coordination, and the ability to respond effectively to dynamic flight situations. It also mirrors real-world missions, where pilots must operate as a cohesive unit—an essential requirement for more demanding operational tasks.
Following their theoretical training and solo flight phases, the trainees entered the stage focused on practical formation flying. They practiced multi-helicopter procedures, inter-crew communication, and maneuvering based on predefined scenarios. Each sortie was followed by a comprehensive debrief evaluating performance strengths and identifying areas that required further improvement.
Formation flying capability is vital for pilots preparing to serve in the OS SR. It demands teamwork, rapid decision-making, and the ability to manage an increased operational workload. Through this training, we ensure that our graduates are equipped not only for independent flight operations, but also for complex, coordinated missions.
The successful completion of the formation flight module marks a symbolic conclusion to this year’s intensive helicopter training provided by HELI COMPANY for the Armed Forces Academy.
